Disaster management has a different emphasis in every different discipline. From the management science point of view, use of administrative data systems, resource utility techniques, project management and planning are integral parts of disaster management.
Similarly, public administration plays a very important role in improving the existing system in Turkey. From the planning point of view, overall preparedness includes town and regional planning, infrastructural inventory management, distribution of population and economic activities, land use, disaster architecture and planning.
From a geoscience point of view, it will cover subjects such as geographical information systems about regional planning and on estimations, space technology and topography. For social sciences the emphasis will be to obtain a better understanding of social attitudes and citizen participation. This is crucial for disaster preparedness and mitigation.
Research on community participation will promote and maintain effectiveness and continuity in disaster management. Civil engineering, besides its customary professional occupation is also obliged to integrate with other disciplines mentioned above.
A succinct summary is provided in the circular diagram adapted from the Disaster Management Center at the University of Wisconsin.
